Helpful Hints

Converting units of measure:

L.O.S.T. means large to small times
S.O.L.D. means small to large divide

Formulas:
Area of a rectangle: A=L*W
Area of a square: A=S squared
Area of a triangle: A= 1/2*B*H
Perimeter of a rectange: 2 *(L + W)
Perimeter of a square: 4S (s+s+s+s)

Meteric System: Units of Length
kilometer (km) = 1,000 meters (m)
meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
1 kilogram(kg) = 1,000 grams (g)
1 liter(l) = 1,000 milliliters (ml)

U.S. Customary System
1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft)

Order of Operation: PEMDAS
*remember that multiplication does not have power over division and addition does not have power over subtraction.

PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION
Commutative Property: Order changes but doesn't change the product
AB=BA
Associative Property: Grouping changes but doesn't change the product
(A*B)*C= A*(B*C)
Identity Property: Anything times 1 equals itself
A*1=A
1*A=A
Zero Property: Anything time 0 equals 0
B*0=0
0*A=0
Distributive Property: Has to include both multiplication and addition
A* (B+C) = (A*B) + (A*C)
(D+E) * F = (D*F) + (E*F)

Properties of Addition
Commutative Property: order does not matter
A + B = B + A
Associative Property: Grouping changes, but doesn't change the sum. Grouping is represented by parentheses represents grouping.
(A + B) + C = A + ( B + C )
Identity Property: Any number added to 0 equals that number.
A + 0 = A

Fractions:
Addition: You must get a common denominator before you add. You only add the numberators and the denominator stays what it is in the problem.

Subtraction: Just like addition, you must get a common denominator before you subtract. You only subtract the numerators and your denominator stays what it is in the problem. Answer must be in simpliest form.

Mulitplication: Simplify before you multiply, then multiply the numerator times the numerator and then denominator times the denominator. Answer must be in simpliest form.

Division: Make sure the mixed numbers are written as improper fractions, then change division to multiplication and write the reciprocal (flip that fraction) of the second fraction. Then follow the steps for multiplying fractions. Answer must be in simplest form.

Percent of a number:

A) Change the percent to a decimal and then multiply.

B) Change the percent to a fraction and then multiply.
